Valiant 42 Gypsy ready to leave Hampton on the Carib 1500 2011
What a wonderful ocean sailing adventure Kate had aboard the Valiant 42 “Gypsy” with the new owners, our friends and clients Matt and Karen and added crew member and old friend Tom. The 2011 Caribbean 1500 left Norfolk on November 11th after a lingering LO that threatened the safe passage of about 67 vessels bound for Tortola. Behind the LO, a high pressure system stalled over us as we sailed gently on a close reach making ALL our Easting. Our friends tracking us thought we were headed for Bermuda or the Azores! We reached Longitude 67 with only five engine hours and finally had to turn it on to get south. Finally, the predicted North East wind came up and changed the scene. With 25-35 knots, squalls, and pretty big waves we flew! We saw 11.2 knots and sailed at about 7.5 to 8 knots for three days! You really appreciate a good ocean going boat. The Valiant 42 Gypsy, pretty much sailed herself with a double reef and staysail with the Monitor windvane steering system effortlessly steering her through the waves. There is absolutely nothing like a great ocean sail aboard a wonderful safe and strong boat! It was magic. Check out the video on U tube also.

Kate and Bernie of RogueWave are thrilled that they had the incredible opportunity to lead Steve Black’s Caribbean 1500 Bahamas Class Rally to Marsh Harbour, Abaco. While the Caribbean 1500 Rally boats were stuck in Norfork for a week due to the hurrican Tomas, Kate and Bernie and the Bahama’s Rally boats left Norfolk VA on November 1, 2010 for a run down the coast to Charleston SC. It was a wild downwind run with 30 knots astern which made for a quick trip. They waited for weather in Charleston and then sailed straight to Marsh Harbor in the Abacos, a run of less than three days. Kate and Bernie are experienced Bahama cruisers and they were able to help all the ralliers get there fast, and get oriented. It was a great success. The rally is a great way to start sailing the blue water and it definately gets you there a lot quicker than meadering down the coast. Maybe Kate and Bernie will do it next year in 2011.

The Sea of Cortez is an unspoiled, unexplored, almost virgin wonderland. It is a hard place to get to from the East Coast, but it was Kate’s big birthday, so we had to charter a small Beneteau there through the Moorings. It is remote and wild with big rocks. It was cold and windy and wonderful. We had a dolphin visit us on New Year’s Eve and it was unforgettable. Hope to get back there somehow.
Don’t miss this place.
Last summer we had a great trip to Maine and braved the fog. Hey, once you survive for a few days you start to enjoy the challenge. You just need really good navigation equipment. In every anchorage and in every quite little village, we met people we know. We visited so many boats we’ve sold and even found people we’ve only spoken with on the phone. We made lots of friends and had a great time.
We hope to see you up there. Let us know if you are sailing North this summer.
Back in 2003, April 17th in Oakland California, owners of Lyle Hess designs…Nor’Sea 27 and Bristol Channel Cutters will gather. We all appreciate the late Lyle Hess for his genius and unique way of packing everything neatly in a small package. RogueWave was there!
We got inspired to host a Lyle Hess Tribute on the Chesapeake Bay, Just counting the Bristol Channel Cutters and the Nor’Sea we’ve sold, we have quite a group. You’ll probably see us in or around Annapolis in September. We had a huge group! We had BCCs, NorSea, and Montgomerys! And Fatty Knees too. Lyle was something!
Panama Canal, Colon to Panama City, on GOSI, Valiant 42 owned by our dear friends Barb and Tom. 2004
Bernie and I were “line handlers” and we had an amazing adventure. It was a great experience going through the Gatun Locks, across Gatun Lake, and through the Miraflores to the Balboa Yacht Club and La Playita! It is a great place to visit even if you never sail through!
When we saw Indigo in Mates “Best” we loved her. When we saw her in Newport, we could not resist. We bought Indigo to put her in the Boat Show for the Sam L. Morse Co. Of course we had to sail the Channel Islands before shipping her home to Annapolis.
Santa Cruz 2005
We had a wonderful adventure sailing from Catalina to Oxnard, to Santa Cruz. It was spectacular! From the beautiful “anchorages” with towering cliffs to the sea life, dolphins and fish and birds. It is an amazing place to sail.
We decommissioned Indigo and shipped her home. Come see her and us at the Annapolis Boat Show.
On Dec 7th, we left Annapolis with snow on the boat and sailed 4,000 miles! Although we did come back four times to take care of business, we actually made down the East Coast, across the Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico, to Key West, to Marathon, to Nassau, the Exumas, and back across the stream to make landfall North of Charleston. We recommend the trip! It was a great voyage in a small seaworthy boat! Aloha, BCC #95 was refit in 2004-05 with everything imaginable including the SSB, laptop, and installed sat phone. Great trip!
RogueWave is a unique brokerage and consulting firm in large part because we sail. We started it all with our HR53 Solstice equipped with every component to enable seamless communication, we manage to run the business and sail. So we sail every chance we get and we look forward to mentoring our friends and clients. Now, whatever boat we sail, we find our friends in every harbor.
One of the best cruises was the fun cruising race from Norfolk to Bermuda. We had a great time with great people. We had a great party aboard Solstice!
